Silver fir wood is traditionally used on the exposed sides of farmhouses in the Black Forest due to its weather-resistant properties. Nowadays it is very popular again because of its versatility and natural resistance to pests, making it perfect for wood flooring. Silver fir wood creates a bright and elegant feeling of space, and a floor made from it is characterized by the contrast between light wood and dark knotholes. Brushing the wood enhances the grain, creating a rustic look.

A rarity from the Black Forest

A rarity from the Black Forest; a resin-free coniferous tree with superb technical attributes. Its light bark and the white undersides of the needles give it its name: the silver fir. It is also recognisable due to its upright, fringed cones. The silver fir tree can grow for up to 600 years and to a height of up to 60 metres.

Finely grown and of the highest quality

We obtain most of our silver fir from sustainable forests in the Black Forest. Their wood is finely grown and can also be felled according to the phases of the moon.

For indoors and out

The silver fir is perfect for both indoor and outdoor use due to its natural characteristics. Outdoors, the silver fir develops a rustic, charming patina. Indoors, the silver fir looks elegant and clear due to its light shade of colour. We also consistently manufacture the floorboards in such a way that they can be sanded several times – whether they are solid wide planks or engineered floorboards. Colour and texture give a special warmth and coziness to your living space. Click here to discover our reference projects!

Solid planks or engineered floorboards?

We manufacture Silver fir wide plank flooring in either solid or engineered platforms, crafted from Blackforest Silver fir trees.

Solid Silver fir floorboards

Solid wide planks made of Silver fir are made from a solid piece of wood, crafted exclusively out of BlackForest Silver fir trees, that grow incredibly slow and offer near knot-free surfaces.

Advantages of the solid Silver fir floorboard
  • solid piece of wood from one section
  • can be sanded several times
  • can also be used as a rift floorboard for floors, walls or ceiling
  • high resistance due to its strength
  • superb joint pattern, especially in the winter months
  • Wood from sustainable forestry, therefore, domestic species of wood
  • highest finishing quality
  • special floorboard formats possible
  • can be glued or screwed in place
Interior spaces and applications

Silver fir isn’t just suitable for interiors, but also for exteriors. In the Black Forest, it is traditionally used for wall cladding, but also suitable for wood flooring. There, it has stood the test of time for many generations and is now experiencing a renaissance.

Age and origin of the trees

The silver fir lives for up to 80 years – until we fell it.
Our wood also originates from the Blackforest in Germany

All of our forest areas are PEFC and FSC certified.

Engineered Floorboards

Our engineered Silver fir floorboards are a more functional alternative to our solid wood floorboards, especially in cases of lower floor heights and slightly higher fluctuations in room climate. The three layers are always glued crosswise to each other, which "locks" the movement of the three layers. The top layer typically consists of a 4-6 mm thick Silver fir sawn veneer, depending on the total thickness of the floorboards.

Advantages of the engineered Silver fir floorboard
  • The top layer can be sanded
  • does not warp due to temperature fluctuations
  • a high-quality floor with central core and back layer made from Rift- & quarter- sawn Spruce wood
  • particularly durable due to 4.5–6 mm top layer
  • can be sanded 2 to 3 times
  • lasts at least one or two generations
  • special formats possible up to 300 mm in width and 10 m in length
  • limited gap building and high dimensional stability
  • Wood from sustainable forestry
  • can be glued in place or installed floatingly

Colouring and surfaces

The silver fir is an excellent choice for wood treatments, as it absorbs oil on a color-fast basis and is easy to work with. The results are immediately visible, making it a popular choice for furniture and flooring. The light color of the wood, along with its natural dark knots, creates a beautiful contrast that complements both dark and light interior styles. The silver fir has a modern and elegant appearance, making it an ideal choice for minimalist living spaces.

Knot grading, texture and grain

Each tree has its own unique characteristics and qualities that make it special. When used as flooring, these characteristics can create a harmonious balance with the space and the people who use it.

The appearance of the plank floor is defined by the natural wood characteristics such as colour, knottiness and other features. To guarantee a high quality product, every tree and every plank is assessed and sorted according to our quality criteria. Knots and other defects are fixed and filled. This results in an even, beautiful surface.

Country Classic

The "Country Classic" grading has a healthy knot pattern with a higher number of knots, also depending on the total length and width of the floorboards. Natural colour differences may occur.

Urban Classic

The "Urban Classic" grading has a calm and elegant appearance, with few and small knots. The lack of knots provides a clean and sleek look, and the fine matured texture gives a sophisticated touch to the flooring.
